Himalayan Oaks
Plant Hawke’s Bay has the pleasure to offer for sale Himalayan Oaks, Quercus leucotrichophora.
Thirty years of research on the dry East Coast have shown that the evergreen Himalayan Oaks are a great way to stabilise hillsides because of their deep roots and coppicing nature. They also provide non-invasive hedging with light canopy trimmings, and they are a source of palatable stock food.
It is also proving promising for commercial timber production for furniture. The trees are also known as Banj Oaks and White Oaks, and come from the central Himalaya areas of Pakistan, Myanmar, Nepal, Thailand, and Vietnam.
Founder of the Himalayan Oak Trust is David Cranwell of Havelock North, who until now has been growing the trees himself. We are honoured he chose Plant Hawke’s Bay to continue his legacy.
Profits from the sale of the Himalayan Oaks go back to India to the Himalaya Consortium for Himalaya Conservation (HIMCON). Money generated from the sale of Himalayan Oak seedlings in New Zealand goes towards funding conservation projects in India.
To join the Himalayan Oak Trust and for more information on this wonderful project, see www.himalayanoaks.com or visit HIMCON on Facebook.
Himalayan Oaks are available at Plant Hawke’s Bay for $10 plus GST, of which $2.50 is gifted back to the Himalayan Oak Trust.
